Celeste & Towerfall Dev Explains Why Games Were Removed from Xbox

Maddy Thorson explained that the decision was made in support of BDS.

Celeste and Towerfall are no longer available on Xbox. The developer says the games were removed to support the BDS boycott.

Developer Maddy Thorson from Maddy Makes Games took to Bluesky to share that the decision was driven by the desire to support the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS), which is a "Palestinian-led movement for freedom, justice and equality."

"For those who're asking, yes we delisted Celeste and TowerFall on XBox. We did this to support the BDS boycott"

TowerFall Ascension is a fan-favorite 2014 four-player local co-op game, and Celeste is a 2.5D platformer released in 2018, which won Best Independent Game at The Game Awards that year.

The BDS movement focuses on companies it considers connected to the Israeli government, as the conflict between Israel and Palestine continues. According to the movement's website, Microsoft is among its targets.

Another studio made a similar choice recently. House House, the team behind the co-op adventure Big Walk, decided to skip Xbox as well. In a statement, the developer said: "We have made the decision not to release Big Walk on Xbox, in accordance with the Palestinian-led BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) movement's call to boycott Microsoft, and their designation of Microsoft Games (and Xbox) as a priority boycott target."
