Alleged Trailer for BioWare’s Canceled Mass Effect Game Leaked Online

An alleged trailer for BioWare’s canceled Mass Effect project has leaked, revealing a possible title of Mass Effect Universe, an older Liara, a new protagonist, and a galactic spy-thriller premise.
An apparently unfinished trailer for BioWare’s canceled Mass Effect project has appeared online just one day after the studio's abrupt closure this week. As of the time of this writing, it's unconfirmed whether this footage is legitimate, but it was posted on Reddit by an alleged former employee.
The approximately two-minute video presents the project as Mass Effect: Universe and seemingly introduces a new protagonist operating within a Milky Way still rebuilding after the Reaper War. Rather than immediately presenting another galaxy-ending threat, the footage points toward a smaller espionage story involving infiltration, stolen intelligence, and political intrigue.
An older Liara T’Soni also appears, connecting the project directly to the original trilogy while suggesting that considerable time has passed since Mass Effect 3. Krogan, Quarian, and other familiar species feature prominently alongside new locations, ships, costumes, and technology.
The video initially appeared beneath a Reddit post discussing an alleged EA employee’s claim that a Mass Effect trailer had been completed several months before the project was canceled. A newly created account named u/Random_Hyabusa_Ninja responded with the footage before receiving approval from the r/MassEffect moderators to publish it as a standalone post.
There is currently no public evidence establishing the uploader’s identity or employment history. The Reddit user who originally claimed to work for EA has not been independently verified either.
The footage nevertheless contains several details that make it unusually convincing. Its protagonist’s clothing, weaponry, spacecraft, older depiction of Liara, Krogan conflict, and possible squad composition align with imagery and clues BioWare released through multiple N7 Day teasers. Its unfinished assets and inconsistent visual quality also resemble an internal preproduction presentation more than a polished consumer trailer. There are no UI elements, for example.
The r/MassEffect moderation team said it could not independently authenticate the video but believed it appeared legitimate and lacked obvious generative-AI markers. Moderators chose not to investigate its source further because they did not want to risk exposing or harming former BioWare employees.
The quality of the footage is rather remarkable if this does turn out to be a fake.
However, even if genuine, the trailer should not be interpreted as evidence that BioWare had completed a substantial portion of the game. The studio’s official farewell message described the project as being in “early development” when EA ended production and closed BioWare. However, many former writers on the project have posted since the closure describing their years-long work they were hoping to share soon. According to BioWare's cinematic supervisor, the new game was poised to have an unprecedented level of autonomy for players.
The video may therefore be a target render or concept trailer assembled from preproduction assets to communicate the intended story, atmosphere, and visual direction. It contains no identifiable gameplay and does not demonstrate that its cinematic sequences were operating inside a playable build.
Mass Effect: Universe may not have been its finalized name, either. Internal projects and trailers commonly use working titles that change before release.
Still, the apparent trailer provides an intriguing outline of what BioWare was considering and makes the cancellation all the more disappointing. Perhaps the IP and project itself will find its way to another studio and find new life.
