It sounds like you shouldn't expect Destiny 2's campaign unvaulting to be ready until 2028, as Bungie tease their plans for the future of the series
Not quite dead as a dodo
When Bungie announced that they would be ceasing to work on major updates for Destiny 2 earlier this year, it obviously felt like that was the end of that, and any future games were not guaranteed whatsoever. Then last month, they announced that they'll be bringing back all of the shooter's vaulted campaigns, which is obviously a lot of work! Now, in a blog post, the developer has outlined where they're at with this process, offering up a timeline of when to expect the unvaulted campaigns, what will be included with them, and light teases for whatever comes after that.
"Our first pass for unvaulting, available to all players, focuses on getting our campaign slate whole again," head of product Josh Deane explains in the blog post. "We're specifically targeting the activity content of Campaigns, Strikes, and Raids from vaulted expansions. Menagerie holds a special place in our hearts (and we've seen years of community requests for a return), so it will be a part of this pass as well." In practical terms, that means the return of the Red War, Forsaken, Curse of Osiris and Warmind campaigns, strikes, raids and raid lairs from said campaigns, and Menagerie Activity with reprised rewards.
The process for this unvaulting apparently began in June as the team scoped the feasibility of it all, and as of now it's pre-production. Full-on production is expected to start in February 2027 at the latest, but it's worth noting that this is expected to take about 12 months to wrap up. That means you won't be jumping back into any of these beloved expansions until 2028 at least, by the sounds of things.
The team also has "stretch goals" that they're investigating for either the unvaulting launch or sometime after, specifically for things like free roam destinations, seasonal activities from Sundial (season 9) to The Coil (season 32), raid and raid lair weapon updates, and PvP maps.
There are seemingly bigger plans for the game too, with some kind of "celebration" to come beyond Moment of Triumph with "new updates", and something referred to as Destiny 'Legacy'; "Our epic journey started over a decade ago, and the whole experience needs to be served to you all where you play today. Expect more information when we come back to you all early next year." Certainly sounds like they're talking about the original Destiny here, but I suppose we should take that with a pinch of salt. Lastly, they mention "Redacted," which is accompanied by this line, "Launch Ventrilo Message: 'We’re back'". No idea what that means, I'll leave that to you Destiny-heads.
Essentially, the core message seems to be that Bungie are "building a new future for Destiny," so, it's not totally dead in the water. You can expect the next major comms update from Bungie in February, too.
