Every 90s Kid Needs to See What Sega Just Did With Sonic
Anyone who played videogames in the 90s needs to see the awesome thing that Sony and IDW just did with Sonic the Hedgehog - an image so hellacious, it would have seemed impossible even in the radical nineties.
Sonic the Hedgehog debuted in 1991's Sonic the Hedgehog as a superfast freedom fighter (actually, he technically debuted as an Easter Egg in 1990's Rad Mobile), and has been running, spinning and bouncing through fans' hearts ever since, with the franchise ballooning to include a gigantic cast of characters, including Shadow, Whisper the Wolf and Charmy Bee.
But one character who's always been missing from Sonic's ensemble? Godzilla, the King of Monsters. That just changed in some genuinely unmissable art.
Godzilla Invades Sonic's Green Hill Zone in Unmissable Art
IDW Publishing recently began publishing Sonic the Hedgehog x Godzilla, from Nick Marino and Jack Lawrence, as Dr. Eggman brings the two franchises together in an effort to harness the raw power of kaiju. The series is a lot of fun, but one piece of art jumps out as something no 90s gamer should miss - Natalie Haines' variant cover of Godzilla attacking Green Hill Zone, above.
The iconic first level in Sonic the Hedgehog, Green Hill Zone is a tropical island covered in loops that showcase Sonic's speed. Haines' cover shows Godzilla leaning through one of the loops while Sonic builds up speed, in an image that's basically everything gamers thought was awesome in the 90s. Tragically for 90s kids, the cover was available exclusively at San Diego Comic-Con, though it's still available on the secondary market.

Of course, that's not to overlook the awesome work of other cover artists for this series, with Jack Lawrence, Mauro Fonseca, Mico Suayan, and more offering up cool compositions, but none encapsulate 90s cool like Haines' image of a fiery Green Hill Zone under attack by Godzilla.
Attack on Titans Gets a Flawless Tribute
However, 90s kids aren't the only ones being catered to by this series, as the upcoming issue #3 has something special for Gen Z. Nikola Čižmešija serves up a tribute to Attack on Titan, with Sonic walking through fiery streets towards a towering Godzilla.
Sonic the Hedgehog x Godzilla may have been described as a random pairing when it was announced, but IDW has made it clear that the creative team know what fans of these franchises want. But even these awesome images are just one reason this year is huge for Godzilla stans.
Godzilla Is Absolutely Dominating Comics in 2026
With Godzilla Minus Zero coming this November, 2026 was already going to be a good year for Godzilla fans, but it's arguably one of the biggest ever for those who are into comics. It's not just that there's a lot of Godzilla content out at the moment - it's that it provides every version of the franchise you could want.
Sonic the Hedgehog offers all-ages fun, Marvel's Godzilla Conquers the Multiverse and DC's Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong 2 have pitted him against the most iconic superheroes in the world, and IDW's The Horror of Godzilla is going truly disturbing with its gorgeous, haunting interpretation. Godzilla is stomping across California in Godzilla vs America: San Diego, and clashing with War of the Worlds' Tripods and Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet in Godzilla’s Monsterpiece Theatre Presents.
Whatever you want to see from Godzilla, 2026 is serving it up, whether it's stopping an alien invasion, stomping on Superman or raining fiery destruction down on Sonic the Hedgehog's iconic opening level, it's somehow all on the menu this year.
Sonic the Hedgehog x Godzilla #1 is available now from IDW Publishing.
