Skyrim fans can try this promising new fantasy RPG for free, but hurry

Fans of The Elder Scrolls, and in particular Skyrim, may want to check out this new playable demo for an open-world RPG that you can play with friends, courtesy of Steam Next Fest. But hurry, this intriguing-looking demo is only available for a limited time.

The RPG in question is ArcheAge Chronicles, an open-world action MMORPG developed and published by the indie studio, XLGAMES. However, nothing about this game looks particularly indie, with its visuals and overall presentation resembling those of a big-budget AAA title. That said, indie games have come a long way over the years, blurring the lines between them and their AAA counterparts.

In ArcheAge Chronicles, you can explore the vast fantasy world of Auroria, take on quests, battle deadly enemies and test your combat skills against other players. The game also features gathering, crafting and other activities, although not all of these will be available in the current demo.

For starters, it has a huge and enticing fantasy world to explore, which should appeal to Skyrim fans, as well as fans of The Elder Scrolls series in general and similar RPGs.

Aside from its quests and battles, Auroria is filled with secrets waiting to be discovered, including ancient ruins and dangerous territories. You're encouraged to venture out and explore at your own pace, with the world also boasting plenty of lore to uncover.

There are multiple ways to approach combat, including melee, ranged attacks and magic, not to mention dodging, blocking and parrying mechanics that should make battles feel engaging.

Like all good RPGs, not least Skyrim, there are also ways to develop your character, improve your abilities and seek out powerful gear as you progress.

Furthermore, if you're looking for an MMORPG alternative to The Elder Scrolls Online, the free demo for ArcheAge Chronicles is certainly worth checking out. However, there is a caveat. The demo is only available until Monday, October 26, 2026. So, if you like the look of this game, you might not want to leave it too long.

What's the story of ArcheAge Chronicles?

"It is the Age of Pioneers. Auroria, a legend long forgotten, has been rediscovered. Now, many hopeful pioneers are headed to this distant land to make a name for themselves. As an experienced explorer, you will be taking your first steps into Auroria as a member of an established trading company," reads the game's synopsis.

"As you embark on this new adventure, you will explore ancient ruins, investigate a catastrophic airship crash, and become embroiled in the web of intrigue surrounding the mysterious and tragic event. Along the way, you will meet many characters shrouded in mystery, each with their own secrets and goals.

Is ArcheAge Chronicles coming to consoles?

Yes, you'll be pleased to know that ArcheAge Chronicles is planned for PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, as well as PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

However, at the time of writing, the full game does not have a confirmed release date, and the developer has yet to confirm whether crossplay will be supported.
