Fortnite quietly updates hidden setting that'll effortlessly auto upgrade your weapons
Fortnite has quietly made a significant change to its ‘auto pick up’ setting that just made upgrading your weapons as seamless as can be.
I’m going to be honest with you. I’ve spent upwards of 800 hours in Fortnite and this is the first I’m hearing of the auto pick up setting, although perhaps that proves I’m not a sweat.
The setting, featured under ‘combat’, previously performed as you might expect; when toggled on, it automatically allowed players to pick up items, providing they had an open inventory slot.
As of a recent update, though, it’ll now do much more than that, automatically upgrading your weapon rarity too.
Essentially, if you’re carrying a certain weapon type and run over a better rarity of that particular weapon, auto pick up will automatically swap it out.
For example, if you’re holding a common or uncommon shotgun and run across a rare, epic, or higher variety, it’ll automatically switch out in your inventory.
This should apply to all item types and while most of us often keep an eye out for upgrades, this feature should make a difference in the heat of battle.
If I’ve downed several players but am still under attack, having auto pick up enabled should allow me to run over their dropped loot pools and quickly acquire anything useful without it taking too much of my attention.
It was Twitter/X user GhostNewgarden who spotted the change, calling it “one of the best QoL changes in a while”.
It’s important to perhaps point out that if you already had auto pick up toggled on, it will have switched to off as per the update, so you need to switch it on again.
And if this is the first you’re hearing of auto pick up, like me, you can find the setting under the ‘combat’ section of Fortnite’s settings.
Chapter 7 will draw to a close next month, with a mini season and Chapter 8 on the way
Fortnite is currently in the midst of holding its annual Fortnitemares celebration ahead of Halloween.
This year’s line-up has ruffled a few feathers though, with the inclusion of Obsession’s Nikki proving to be pretty controversial.
It’s wild to think that it’s already almost time for Chapter 7 to draw to a close.

Fortnitemares will seemingly run for the remainder of Chapter 7 Season 4 with this latest season due to end on November 1.
It’s then expected that we’ll enter another month-long “mini” season as we have in recent years. You remember the excellent The Simpsons season which dropped last year.
If we’re to follow the same pattern again, Chapter 8 will then likely commence in early to mid December, with recent years seeing a new chapter begin following a reveal at The Game Awards, with this year’s ceremony due to be held on December 11.
This year’s mini season is yet to leak online although insider FNBRintel previously said that it would feature “a new island but not completely new content”, so whether it’s some sort of remix of previous themes remains to be seen.
As for Chapter 8, there have been surprisingly few leaks for that too. Instead, fans are trying to make sense of potential in-game teases, with multiverse and pirate themes among the rumours.
