A Daedalic adventure classic is free on GOG

We previewed A New Beginning, a Daedalic point-and-click adventure about saving the world from environmental catastrophe, all the way back in 2011, and it seemed promising: "Neither preachy nor educational," despite its ecological angle, but "pure sci-fi, involving a clash between one magic power-source that nukes the Earth, and a race to get it replaced with another magic one that turns simple algae into the ultimate fuel." A good bit of time-travel, too. That's always fun.

That promise paid off in the final release—not one of Daedalic's most memorable games, but a solid point-and-clicker from a studio that was at the time beginning to establish itself as one of the masters of the genre. And all of this is relevant to you because A New Beginning: Final Cut is now free on GOG.

I'm not sure why it's free, exactly: The giveaway isn't explicitly connected to GOG's currently-underway 18th Anniversary Sale (which is worth checking out in its own right, as always there are some very cheap deals to be had), nor is A New Beginning what I'd call a Halloween-themed game—although the prospect of ecological collapse driven by climate change that humanity seems studiously determined to ignore is pretty horrifying, come to think of it.

But on the other hand, who cares, because it's free: Just hit the giveaway link on GOG's front page and it's yours. You've got until November 2 to make the grab.
