Elder Scrolls: Oblivion character creator is the stuff of nightmares in VR

New footage of a mod which turns The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion into a virtual reality game has been posted online, and the results are pretty horrifying.

Earlier this week, an Elder Scrolls modder by the name of Chasm uploaded a video detailing some of the progress they've made on a VR mod for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

Although it still seems early in development, we're pretty horrified by the example clip that Chasm posted, no matter how impressive the results are.

"Working on my Oblivion VR character creator," reads a post from Chasm on X (formerly Twitter), with a 38 second video attached to the post.

The mod seemingly allows VR players to change their character's appearance by literally reaching out and grabbing their face to sculpt it into whatever they wish, being able to pull and twist to contort certain features of the character's face at will.

This results in a few abominations that Chasm has created, with results ranging from a massively inflated forehead, to large eyes, and a squashed nose. It all seems pretty natural, almost like Oblivion was built for virtual reality from the get-go, but the results are so horrifying that it all feels like it's in the spirit of the original Oblivion character creator.

Chasm later shared another clip from their Oblivion VR mod, this time showing off a multitude of different moments while exploring the open world Cyrodiil.

The video shows them riding on horseback, complete with native controls of holding the reins. It then shows them using a bow and arrow, with the mechanics working similar to the way it functions in Skyrim VR.

The video finally cuts to a few more clips showing Chasm interacting with NPCs, swimming underwater, and picking up items.

All-in-all, it looks like a pretty impressive mod, but there isn't a sign of it releasing just yet. Chasm is testing the mod using a Meta Quest 3, so compatibility with other headsets such as the Steam Frame isn't confirmed either.

Oblivion's character creator is one of the best if you want to create abominations

Although it's certainly not one of the first games to feature a character creator, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion's customisation was pretty novel for the time. Many games of 2006 didn't quite offer you the same kind of freedom to change almost every aspect of a character's face, with extreme results depending on where you moved the sliders.

Due to the already rather funky designs of Oblivion's character models, this led to Oblivion characters becoming a meme within the community. Characters with massive heads, puckered lips, and discoloured skin became the norm for a character created in-game, with players proudly sharing their designs in online communities like r/ElderScrolls and r/OblivionAbominations on Reddit.

With the release of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered last year, this trend continued as Bethesda allowed players to continue stretching their character sliders to extreme levels, causing these kinds of distorted character designs to reappear in a modern engine.
