Valor Mortis, Soulslike ARPG from Ghostrunner's Creators, Is Out

Valor Mortis, One More Level's latest title, gained plenty of positive reviews from the critics.

Valor Mortis, a soulslike ARPG developed by One More Level, the team behind Ghostrunner, is officially out. In this intensely violent first-person horror full of gore, you play as William, a deceased soldier of Napoleon's army who rose from the dead.

The places you used to know have changed dramatically since you last saw them, and now a mysterious plague is taking over. You need to navigate the twisted, alternate version of 19th-century Europe, trying to outsmart Napoleon’s Eternal Guard and survive through this terror.

In the game, you will fight your enemies with a sword, a pistol, and your newly discovered zombie superpowers that get stronger with every opponent you kill. Ultimately, your goal is to uncover the spine-chilling truth behind the dreadful plague and your painful resurrection you never asked for.

While some critics have mixed feelings about One More Level's latest release, the reviews are mostly positive. Gamer Social Club's Andrew Cooper praised the game's worldbuilding, saying that they "enjoyed the overall world layout and the way it feels so interconnected."

DualShockers' Christian Bognar was impressed with Valor Mortis' game design and noted that "each level in Valor Mortis looks fantastic, has its own character, and feels completely distinct from the others." CGMagazine's Zubi Khan wrote that "combat in Valor Mortis feels satisfying and nuanced, with both melee and ranged weapons carrying a nearly equal weight in their utility during fights."

The game has very positive reviews on Steam, with users commenting that "the transition to a first-person perspective in a soulslike can be hit or miss, but here it works remarkably well." They also acknowledged that the game delivers everything players love about soulslike games without repeating the universally disliked flaws the genre is guilty of. "No boss runbacks, checkpoints are frequent, you can pause the game, all mechanics are clearly explained," a user wrote.

At Gamescom 2025, when Valor Mortis was announced, the game price was set at $49.99. However, about a month before the release, the developers promised to lower it to $39.99, and now it is available on Steam for that price.
