Cyberpunk 2077 sequel appears to confirm addition of multiplayer

Cyberpunk 2077 turned out to be one of CD Projekt RED’s best games, but based on what we know of the sequel so far, it’s going to be outshone pretty quickly.
While we’re not expecting to see Cyberpunk 2 for many, many years, we are hearing some new details on it from CD Projekt RED devs, like how modders are helping develop the game.
Now it sounds like multiplayer is being considered for the sequel, which is music to our ears considering it was a sorely missed aspect of the first game.
As spotted by CheatHappens, CD Projekt RED is on the lookout for someone with an “understanding of multiplayer network architecture and client-server.”
Maybe the studio should hire some of the fans who’ve been working on the Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer mod if they haven’t already…
Obviously this isn’t direct confirmation that Cyberpunk 2 will support multiplayer, but what else could it be referring to?
The real question is what kind of multiplayer could we be looking at for the next game. A GTA: Online-style experience would be cool, but Grand Theft Auto VI will be hard to beat on that front.
Alternatively, it could go the route of the Destiny games and have a mixture of PvP and PvE. Players could form their own crews and do heists with each other, before taking on rivals in arena-style confrontations.
If multiplayer is included in the next game, it’ll almost certainly be standalone as opposed to something attached to the story.
Cyberpunk 2077’s cancelled multiplayer could have been legendary
Prior to Cyberpunk 2077’s launch, CD Projekt RED intended to include a multiplayer mode in the months that followed, but the idea was ultimately scrapped.
Like GTA: Online, it would have been a separate experience to the base game, so you would probably have been able to create a brand-new character.
You’d then explore Night City at your own pace with either friends or random players, with missions to undertake as you roam around.
Ultimately though, CD Projekt RED had to scrap the mode in order to fix the near-endless problems with the game. In the end that was the right call, as when you look at the game now compared to when it launched, the difference is night and day.
What I’m most curious about, however, even more so if multiplayer is being added to the sequel, is how PvP is going to work.
GTA: Online was fun, but it could get annoying after a while if you had too many bad apples in the lobby with you. No one likes their mission interrupted by a griefer looking for a laugh, so CD Projekt RED’s approach is going to be interesting.
It could follow Fallout 76’s example and only enable PvP when both players agree to it, though that doesn’t feel like Night City to me.
Personally, I’d rather there be PvP zones. With safe areas players can go if they’re not looking for a scrap.
Again, it’s too early to tell what CD Projekt RED has planned, as The Witcher IV is the studio’s top priority right now. Hopefully we get an official update soon, though.
