'Save Mass Effect' rally reaches huge milestone as every juicy detail about EA's cancelled game have leaked

Three days ago, EA's studio culling and staff cutbacks saw the end of the esteemed studio BioWare, and, by extension, cancelled its current revival of the Mass Effect franchise with Universe.

The 30-year-old studio, best known for its work on era-defining RPGs like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age, Jade Empire, Baldur’s Gate and Mass Effect, was axed from EA's control as the new Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund reshuffled the pack, two months after buying the gaming giant.

By laying off 400 staff members and closing BioWare, EA has tried to divert attention to Star Wars: Battlefront III, but that hasn't stopped a huge wave of players from rallying against the changes.

In fact, off the back of BioWare's pending closure, details of the canned Mass Effect Universe have emerged alongside a petition for a wider EA boycott.

Ex-BioWare playtesters reveal all about Mass Effect Universe

Hot on the back of the announcement of its cancellation, details have been pouring out about what Mass Effect Universe had in store.

A trailer, which was confirmed to be real by renowned Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier, first revealed that the game would have seen an almost entirely new cast, aside from the return of N7's Liarar T'Soni.

But now that the studio is closed, playtester and content creator 'Dantics' has revealed everything that the title would have boasted.

In a lengthy social media post, they claimed that the Mass Effect Universe would have included features such as a three-faction universe set in a galactic Cold War-inspired conflict 600 years after the Reaper War.

Players would have had a reworked weapon system akin to James Bond, Hitman-like missions similar to the popular ME1-3 from the last title, and unsanitised realism with romance and interpersonal squad relations.

"From what I saw, BioWare was making Mass Effect for us, the fans, not for people who don't exist. It looked incredible. And now we may never get to play it," they said.

SaveMassEffect petition goes viral with over 100,000 signatures

In a bid to either find a new home for BioWare, or to have EA reconsider their actions against the studio, a huge petition has now gone viral.

Titled 'SaveMassEffect', over 100,000 have joined the movement, which includes an urge to boycott EA games until a resolution is found.

"Therefore, we are urgently petitioning EA to take decisive action by committing to the continued development of Mass Effect," the petition reads.

"This commitment requires proper funding, adequate staffing, and time allocation to maintain and advance the high standards the franchise is known for.

"Alternatively, EA could consider licensing the Mass Effect intellectual property (IP) to another studio that shares the passion and vision to keep it alive and allow it to flourish anew."

It's a huge statement from EA's new Saudi PIF owners, but hopefully there is a way that the hundreds of thousands of waiting fans will get to see their wishlist dreams come true in the future.
