Nightjar’s fearless rebranding of The Swaddle pushes the boundaries for India’s new media era — The Brand Identity – Home of the Greatest in Graphic & Brand Design

The Swaddle has long stood out in India’s digital media landscape, offering young Indians nuanced perspectives on news, culture and current events. In a space often dominated by fake news and state-sponsored narratives, The Swaddle has evolved into a fiercely independent voice. Founded in Mumbai in 2014, it has grown rapidly and evolved from a digital publisher to a creative production house, making podcasts, videos and editorial content. This significant transformation prompted the need for an updated brand identity – one that would preserve the brand’s core mission of fostering intellectual engagement in an independent space while reflecting its expanded role in media.

Nightjar, a Sydney-based creative agency known for its boundary-pushing aesthetic, was entrusted with the task of reimagining The Swaddle’s identity. The challenge was outlined succinctly by The Swaddle’s founder during an initial workshop – “We are so much bigger than our site feels.” This sentiment reflected the dual challenge of reimagining both an outdated brand identity and a website that no longer served the company’s evolving business model. Sam Turner, Design Director at Nightjar, elaborates on the task at hand, saying, “The Swaddle’s growth and its transition from a publisher to a production house offered an opportunity to rethink every aspect of the brand. Our aim was to create an identity as bold and provocative as their content.”

A key focus was ensuring the identity could support the multifaceted nature of the brand’s content, which now includes podcasts, films, and traditional editorial work. The existing site, while rich with diverse and engaging content, lacked the structural capacity to surface these different types of media effectively across all pillars. Nightjar sought to design a platform that felt like much more than a magazine, enveloping readers in a journey through social issues. The goal was to provide context and continuity at every touchpoint, encouraging users to delve deeper.

The visual direction of the redesign was driven by The Swaddle’s continuous effort to challenge the status quo. Turner describes this approach as ‘fearless expression,’ a concept that informed every design choice. Protest movements, fashion, pop culture and traditional editorial design all played a role in shaping a more distinct voice for the brand. “We explored the juxtaposition of the classic with the contemporary. This led us to explore unapologetic, high-energy graphic techniques like collage, halftone patterns, and bitmap textures, all of which echo the rebellious spirit of counterculture movements,” shares Turner. Elements of Pop Art were woven in to create a vibrant visual language that resonates with the brand’s audience.

A key visual concept used throughout the redesign is the idea of ‘layers’, a metaphor for The Swaddle’s role in providing deeper context to our world, adding visual ‘layers’ of understanding and information when it matters most. “Layers became a visual shorthand to represent the depth and complexity of the topics covered by The Swaddle,” notes Turner. Nightjar’s layered UX approach mirrored this creative strategy; the design team developed inter-connected modules that allowed related content pieces to surface on top of one another, creating a seamless user journey through various threads of social, cultural, and news topics, without being overwhelmed by a traditional news format. “It not only represents The Swaddle’s commitment to nuanced storytelling but also creates a more engaging and exploratory digital experience for their audience.”

The typography is equally unapologetic, and strikes a balance between boldness and legibility. Nightjar collaborated closely with Frost Type to craft a custom wordmark consisting of letterforms built around their proprietary typeface, FT Bureau. “We took inspiration from iconic editorial mastheads to design a mark that resonates with our young, progressive audience while maintaining a sense of maturity for our secondary audience of academics, journalists and film producers,” says Turner. The distinctive wordmark balances a revolutionary spirit with intellectual sophistication, perfectly embodying the brand’s essence.

Complementing the wordmark, the brand identity relies on two main typefaces – Formula Type’s FT Aktual and Dinamo’s Monument Grotesk Mono. “FT Aktual is the cornerstone of The Swaddle’s identity, chosen for its versatility and unapologetic aesthetic. Its clean, geometric structure paired with fluid curves mirrors the balance found in our wordmark, making it ideal for both display and long-form text.” Monument Grotesk Mono, on the other hand, was chosen for functional elements like metadata and captions, adding a subtle contrast to the overall typographic system.

On the technical side, Nightjar migrated all content, including posts, videos, and podcasts from 2018 onward, from WordPress to a headless CMS, Sanity. The migration ensured zero downtime and no loss of content, while empowering The Swaddle’s editorial team to easily update the platform and highlight different types of media.

With deconstructed type and structured layouts, The Swaddle’s identity reflects a commitment to elevate cutting-edge journalism in India’s media landscape. It honours the brand’s legacy while positioning it as a trusted platform for young Indians seeking transparency and intellectual engagement in a complex world.
