Playfully Vibrant Abstract Murals by Zebu Enliven Urban Walls
For more than a decade, Berlin-based artists Lynn Lehmann and Dennis Gärtner, a.k.a. Zebu, have been transforming otherwise mundane walls and surfaces into vivid, geometric paintings. Moving between patterns and representational abstraction, the duo draw on their adjacent work in illustration and graphic design to create eye-popping compositions. Indeed, much of their practice is studio-based, so murals introduce broader possibilities in a variety of settings. “There’s something special about being able to interrupt someone’s everyday routine with an unexpected visual surprise,” the pair says.
Currently, Zebu is experimenting with a more intuitive approach to murals as a complement to their method if planning extensively beforehand. “It’s been a really exciting and surprising experience that has taught us to trust the process more and brought back a lot of the fun of painting.” See more on Zebu’s Instagram.
