A tasty transformation: Darling Visual Communications whips up a delicious rebrand for Bao Makers — The Brand Identity – Home of the Greatest in Graphic & Brand Design

At Singapore’s popular restaurant, Bao Makers, food transcends mere nourishment. Since 2015, they have been at the forefront of Singapore’s culinary landscape, pioneering the fusion bao revolution with a commitment to blending tradition and innovation. This is a space where artisanal craftsmanship meets storytelling, where each bao embodies cultural narratives and flavours.

To freshen up their brand identity, Bao Makers reached out to local design studio Darling Visual Communications, to create a cohesive and engaging brand that captured the essence of their culinary artistry while visually connecting various touchpoints.

The foundation of Bao Makers’ identity was defined under the artistic supervision of Creative Director Chin Yuanhong, while taking notes from the tactile, hands-on process of bao-making itself. The act of making baos, an intricate balance between precision and creativity, is mirrored in the bold yet elegant design elements used in the brand’s visuals. “Our branding employs a familiar checked pattern, artfully enlarged to echo the silhouette of a bao. It’s a nod to the rhythmic kneading and folding of dough, creating a visual metaphor for the merging of history and creativity at Bao Makers,” shares Yuanhong. This dynamic design element flows through every aspect of the brand, creating a unified visual language that connects the food, packaging, and the space itself. It invites customers to experience the essence of bao-making from the moment they see the brand.

The colour palette was carefully selected to reflect the vibrant and diverse nature of Singapore’s food culture, with each hue evoking the bold, dynamic flavours Bao Makers is known for. Just as the baos themselves offer a mix of traditional and modern tastes, the colours capture this duality, infusing both energy and grounded tradition into the design language.

For typography, the team chose a minimalist geometric font that harmonises with the brand’s playful patterns and vibrant colours. “We selected Ano Half Wide as the primary typeface,” says Yuanhong. This font, with its clean lines and monoline structure, complements the brand’s fluidity, allowing the text to remain clear and impactful without overshadowing the visual narrative.

Packaging plays a vital role in how customers first experience a brand. For Bao Makers, the design team ensured that the experience begins the moment someone interacts with the packaging. “We’ve crafted our packaging to initiate a journey of discovery and delight from the first interaction with the box. The design features a unique pattern that compresses and expands, reflecting the soft, bouncy texture of our baos,” he says, adding that they consciously designed each interaction with the brand to be both visually and emotionally rewarding.

The interior design is where Bao Makers’ story truly comes alive. The space was conceived as an extension of the brand’s identity – immersive, modern and inviting. From the checked pattern on the walls to the colours and materials used throughout, every element becomes a physical representation of the brand’s narrative. “The space is a canvas for the story to unfold. It’s designed to reflect the fusion of tradition and innovation that defines Bao Makers, while also creating a welcoming atmosphere where customers can connect with the food on a deeper level,” Yuanhong explains.

But perhaps the most captivating aspect of this delicious new identity lies in its familiarity, furthering the intrinsic connection between food and storytelling. Yuanhong reflects, “The main pattern is a common checked design reminiscent of diner settings or picnic blankets, but with subtle distortions and adjustments that turn it into something fresh and relevant to the product.” As the restaurant continues to serve up delicious baos in Singapore, its brand tells a story as rich and flavourful as the baos itself. A tasteful reimagination of tradition and culinary explorations, all within the embrace of a bao bun.
