Associated British Foods subsidiary Allied Bakeries has completed its acquisition of Hovis Group, bringing the two organisations together under a single umbrella entity named Hovis Bakeries.

To establish a dedicated corporate presence for the merged business, branding agency BrandOpus was appointed to create the positioning, visual identity, and launch messaging centred on the concept “Nourishing the Nation”.

The project marks a continuation of a 15-year partnership between BrandOpus and Associated British Foods, during which the studio has led rebrands for consumer names including Kingsmill, Twinings, Blue Dragon, and SilverSpoon.

The new corporate identity positions Hovis Bakeries as a category leader capable of addressing long-term sector challenges, following a decade of volume decline in the wrapped bread market driven by shifting consumer habits and emerging dietary trends.

Sarah Arrowsmith, chief executive at Hovis Bakeries, said, “This acquisition brings together two national baking institutions. The creation of Hovis Bakeries is a huge opportunity to create a sustainable bakery business that can lead and reshape the bakery category. Partnering with BrandOpus has allowed us to translate our vision for the business into a visual identity that powerfully unites both businesses.”

Subverting iconography

Rather than drawing on traditional visual tropes common across the bread aisle, the identity avoids conventional motifs such as wheat sheaves, loaves, or sunrises. Instead, BrandOpus developed a corporate visual system built around the concept of ‘Elemental Power’, using the four natural elements involved in baking as a central metaphor for the unified strengths of the two merging companies.

The core graphic logo mark features four distinct geometric, teardrop-like shapes in green, slate blue, warm orange, and golden yellow, set against a deep plum background. The mark evolves into a flexible identity system applied across internal signage, stationery, digital platforms, badges, and corporate collaterals, operating at a corporate scale alongside consumer-facing brands such as Hovis and Kingsmill.

Leo Hadden, head of strategy at BrandOpus, said, “The identity was designed to carry the authority of a business that exists to lead the category. That meant resisting the familiar visual language of bakery – the wheat, the loaf, the sunrise – and conceiving something with genuine stature instead.

“The brand idea is Nourishment, and our identity encodes that in an ownable asset system at a corporate scale. It will stand confidently alongside the Hovis and Kingsmill consumer brands, re-establishing bakery as the food of life.”

The identity launch coincides with the rollout of the company’s new corporate website, with further touchpoints scheduled for release as integration progresses over the coming months.
