Can local government reorganisation realise the value of brand?

With structural changes happening across England, councils have a rare opportunity to rethink what they stand for – and how they can build trust with residents, writes graphic designer Dennis Cook

Announcements about local government reorganisation (LGR) have come thick and fast in the past few weeks. It has made me wonder: how will these new councils tackle and value brand? Do they care? Who keeps what from a brand, logo and visual identity view point? Do we keep anything at all?

One thing is certain: ‘business as usual’, and all that other corporate speak, needs to be taken off the table.

But first, let’s take a moment to acknowledge that there are a lot of people who will feel anxious about their place in all this. Hopefully, uncertainty will turn to clarity in the coming weeks.

For over ten years, I’ve worked with local authorities both in-house and as an external contractor on a range of communication and brand projects. From community safety, highways and local business development, to waste management, public health and most recently tourism.
